UK iPod Owners are Crooks

Not many people in the UK are aware that, whenever they rip a CD they own to their computer and/or iPod, they’re actually breaking the law. It’s amusing to point this out to people, especially politicians who talk about what music they have on their iPod.

I’m glad someone has raised this issue and its gotten some press. However, I worry that opening the door to changing the law is going to give the record industry and opportunity to bend copyright law even more in their favor.

The law should be changed, of course. I mean, any law that makes everyone a criminal isn’t a very good law. But, I don’t want to see the record industry get concessions like blank media levies. I guess we’ll see what happens. I’m going to enjoy calling John Prescott a crook though.

Call for legal copying of own CDs:
People should be given a “private right to copy’” their own CDs and DVDs, says a think tank.
